The bad? Daniel's strange exit from the series as he, seemingly all of a sudden, became overcome by ghosts and hallucinations and wound up burning himself alive. The good? Madison taking a huge step by murdering Celia and the show taking a huge step by fully embracing Chris' budding sociopathic side. Arriving in Mexico helped settle the story, though Celia's compound (which was really Thomas' estate) held both good and bad things. Basically, everything that could threaten them while they were on a boat, did.
bad decisions leading to Nick and Chris in the water with walkers, the boat purposefully stopping off at places where crazy people lived, etc. It could have, suppose, but it just felt like the show was working too hard to make things dangerous - i.e. Setting things fully in Mexico by the end of the first half of the season was a good move, especially since the ocean stuff wasn't working. Let's get a bit spoilery now and look at what Season 2 did right. You can skip to the Verdict section if you want to avoid.

Warning: Full spoilers for the season follow. Particularly Travis, whose anger wound up coming full circle in a huge way. So overall, the back half, despite its clumsy structure, took our characters to more interesting places. Also, the midseason finale faltered whereas the double-sized season finale, "Wrath" and "North," took us out of the year on a strong note. There was a good idea present at one point, about pirates tricking Alicia into giving away her boat's position, but the second part of that hostage/takeover story fumbled and everyone, on both sides, came off feeling inept. The first half, which primarily focused on the voyage of the Abigail never quite took off. I enjoyed the idea of the Abigail group being split up, but the show never found its groove with the pacing outside of "Grotesque" and the Travis/Chris parts of "Do Not Disturb" and "Date of Death." Still, the second half of the season, despite my hangups, was the stronger of the two parts. We'd leave some of our main characters in peril and then it'd be an episode or two before we'd discover their fate - all the while knowing that, for the most part, they'd be okay. Momentum would build and then quickly sputter thanks to unnecessary cliffhangers and the somewhat graceless switching back and forth between arcs. series The Walking Dead woefully played around with in its Season 6. But things would quickly crumble afterward and Fear the Walking Dead would adopt the weird structural trickery that O.G. It was that episode that helped shape the back half of Season 2, which focused on everyone being scattered. Other than that though, Nick's trek through Mexico, in "Grotesque" gave us one of the season's strongest outings. It was rare for him to be on the wrong side of reason, despite his tendency to take risks and/or take off, so that's why his instant belief in Celia's ideology toward the end of the first half of the season felt forced.
Nick, another standout from Season 1 (despite making a few bad junkie judgement calls), continued to semi-shine in Season 2. Likewise, we learned much more about Strand - who was already the most interesting character coming out of Season 1 despite only showing up right at the end - while the tragedy of Madison's family, with regards to her husband, was also explored in satisfying ways. Travis, who ended Season 1 with a ferocious fit of anger and then a tragic moment where he had to pull the trigger on his ex-wife came out of Season 2 a much more well-rounded character - a good man who, basically, put the zompocalpyse on hold in order to try and reach out to his son. By the end, yes, I think it worked with regards to some characters, but not all. This would be the time for the show to, basically, take its time and give us more insight into our heroes' hearts and minds while correcting some of the missteps from the first season.
